World AIDS Day Events

  • Red Ribbon Contest: Quiz programs and Poster Presentation competitions on HIV/AIDS, were organized in the month of December among the Nursing students of Orissa. Photo
  • Quiz and Painting Competition on STOP AIDS was organized in the premises of School of Pharmacy, Cuttack.
  • A signature campaign on “STOP AIDS” was organized among the nursing students of Cuttack.
  • One day Seminar on “Nurses’ Role in HIV/AIDS Control” in College of Nursing, Cuttack, Orissa on the World AIDS Day (1st December 2008).
  • A signature campaign on “STOP AIDS” was organized among the school students of Bhubaneswar, at regional sciences center.

Healthy Future Event

A Health Quiz (written, English), Essay writing (English) & Painting Competition was held on 9th December 2008 among the school students (class 8, 9, 10) of Bhubaneswar at the Regional Science Center, Sachivalaya Marg, Bhubaneswar. The theme of the contest was “Towards a Healthy Future”. Students from various schools of the city participated enthusiastically in the competition.

SAY NO TO TOBACCO (SNOT) Events:

"Say NO to Tobacco " (SNOT) initiative is a campus (school and college) based tobacco awareness program across the four states of eastern India: Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal. Right now the program is organizing creative writing, painting, and quiz competitions in different schools, colleges and health care institutes at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Puri (Orissa) ; Chaibasa, Ranchi (Jharkhand) ; Patna (Bihar); Kolkata and Kharagpur (West Bengal). Simultaneously Tobacco Awareness Signature Campaigns are being organized in all the participating schools and colleges. This program aims to create awareness among the student population regarding Tobacco Abuse; it’s harmful effects and thus facilitates the path for a tobacco free society.

  • On 15th November’08, a signature campaign , slogan writing contest and Health quiz were organized in the premises of Loyola School , Bhubaneswar, Orissa on the occasion of school Annual Fete (photo). There was a huge enthusiastic participation by the students, teachers and parents as well. (we kindly acknowledge the generous contribution of Ms Sarmistha, Kolkata; towards sponsoring this event)
  • In November 2008, An Art competition on “Say NO to Tobacco” was organized among the nursing students of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Photo
  • In October 2008, a Creative Art competition on “Leave Tobacco; Live Life” was organized among the Medical students across the state Orissa. Video, Photo
  • In October 2008 , painting/drawing and cartooning and Essay competition on “Leave Tobacco; Live Life” was organized among the Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy students of NIRTAR, Olatpur, Orissa. A signature Campaign for SNOT was also conducted concurrently.
  • In October 2008, an inter school competition on creative art on “say no to tobacco” was organized in Chaibasa, Jharkhand.
  • A signature campaign for SNOT was organized among school and college students of Jharkhand in October’08.
  • A Health Awareness Quiz was organized during the Puja Festival (October’08) in Chaibasa with an aim to combine fun with learning.
  • In July-August 2008, tobacco awareness painting competitions were conducted in primary schools of Bhubaneswar town ; . (We are thankful to Ms Swati Sucharita, Bhubaneswar for patronizing this event).

FOCUS Events:

  • October 2008: October Month is the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. An Inter college Breast Cancer awareness quiz (Pink Ribbon Contest) was held among women students of medical and dental, physiotherapy and occupational therapy colleges of Orissa.
  • Nurses and cancer prevention: Nurses can play powerful role in the global fight against cancer. Special breast and cervical cancer awareness workshops were conducted in the nursing schools and Nursing Colleges to enhance nursing involvement in cancer prevention and control. A special focus of the workshop was to address strategies for increasing involvement of nurses in tobacco cessation interventions too keeping in view of the current tobacco epidemic in India.
  • Breast cancer quiz program (let’s know breast cancer) were held for girl students studying in general colleges of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

GLOBAL HAND WASHING DAY Events

  • World Health Organization has declared 15th October as The Global Hand Washing Day. From 13th October to 18th October a hand washing campaign was organized among the children living in urban slums of Bhubaneswar. The mothers and children were motivated to adopt proper hand washing practice.
  • Physicians working in various dispensaries and hospitals of Bhubaneswar were requested to teach the appropriate hand washing behavior to the out door patients. Patients and their attendants were elaborately demonstrated the basics of hand washing and its merits.
  • A " short speech " competition was organized among the primary school children on the “routine practice of hand washing and its role in preventing diseases”. A very good response from the students was observed. Best students were awarded and all the participants took part in a mass hand washing event.

STOP TB Events

Health care Professionals and STOP TB: An Essay Competition on “Present Scenario of TB in India and the Elimination Strategies Required” was organized among the medical and dental students of Orissa in September 2008.

Healthy Environment Initiative

A Painting Competition on “Environmental Pollution” was organized among the high school students of Chaibasa district, Jharkhand in August 2008.

A Painting competition on Environmental Pollution was taken up to create awareness for healthy environment among the primary school children of Bhubaneswar Town Orissa in July 2008.
